Preserving the Beirut Heritage

L’Orient Building, an iconic four-story office block located at Lot #12-MARFA’A at the heart of Beirut Central District, has stood as a testament to the city's history. The structure suffered extensive damage during the civil war, and the effects of weathering and aging further compounded its deterioration. To restore this architectural gem, an ambitious renovation project was initiated.

CHALLENGES

Damage Assessment

The first challenge involved a meticulous assessment of the damage. The building's façade bore the scars of time and conflict, necessitating careful examination to categorize the extent of damage and devise appropriate restoration methods.

Materials Selection

The choice of materials for the restoration was a critical decision. Stainless steel, lime-based mortar, yellow and white stones, epoxy, and grout were selected to ensure historical authenticity and structural integrity.

Structural Connection

The renovation required a unique approach to connect the new and existing structures. Steel dowels and stainless-steel fixations were used to ensure a seamless bond, respecting the building's historical significance.

RESTORATION METHODS

Categorization of Lacunae

The façade's restoration focused on categorizing different levels of damage, from minor impacts (A1, A2, A3) that required cleaning and bush hammering to extensive  structural impacts (C1, C2, C??3) that demanded reconstruction. Each type of damage was treated with precision.

Restoration and Repointing

The restoration process involved removing loose materials and repairing or replacing damaged stone blocks. The technique chosen depended on the extent of the damage and the materials used, ensuring the preservation of the original stonework.

Cleaning

An intricate approach was employed for cleaning the façade. It began with simple methods like brushing and progressed to more intensive techniques such as pressure washing, soap solutions, and clay packs for deep-seated stains. This meticulous approach was necessary to restore the façade to its former glory without causing any harm to the stonework.

The L’ Orient Building's South Façade renovation project is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and respect for historical significance. The challenges of assessing and categorizing damage, selecting appropriate materials, and designing a structural connection concept were all met with care and precision. The restoration methods, from categorization to cleaning, were chosen to ensure the preservation of the building's heritage while rejuvenating its grandeur. The project stands as a shining example of how modern restoration techniques can breathe new life into historical structures, allowing them to continue their legacy for generations to come.
